In terms of cinema, however, it is important to note that Dockum made significant (if unconventional) use of filmic technologies—the filmstrip (though Dockum’s were not made to be developed or run through a standard moving-picture device), lenses, projected light—yet was at pains to distinguish his art from film. Explaining the mechanics of his apparatus to architect Frank Lloyd Wright in a letter dated June 10, 1944, he emphasized the role of film in his work:
